This is an image of my great grandfather's Social Security card from 1939. Social Security was a very important outcome of the Great Depression. During the Depression, many people lost all of there money from the bank and had none left for when they were older. That money was gone and there was no chance of receiving any of it back. So in simple terms, Social Security was put in place to prevent that disaster from ever happening again in the future. The main idea of this act is that while working, every paycheck you receive is deducted a certain amount of money from the salary, it is then matched by your employer and then is immediately sent to the treasury to be held for future usage. Social Security helps people 65 years of age and older with a check in the mail with money that they have earned and set aside years in advance. This was a necessary and crucial outcome of the Great Depression, and having my own great grandfather's actual Social Security card from that time is such a treasured artifact of mine!
